Bitterness of Soul

To give a little bit of background on this passage let me tell you what is happening. Hannah is in the temple praying to the Lord for a son. She is getting older and has not been able to have children and every year she goes up to the temple and prays for a son. Now her husband has another wife and she has several children and she provokes Hannah to the point where Hannah is weeping and will not eat. This particular time at the temple, she is weeping and wondering why God hasn’t seen fit for her to bear a child. In Bible times, to not have children was a disgrace and her husband loved her dearly and desired to have children with her.

Now, what I want to focus on for a few moments has to do with the concept of bitterness of soul. In this passage, Hannah’s bitterness is coming from her not being able to have a child. In our lives, there are many circumstances that come in that can leave us bitter and sometimes even cause us to question God’s love for us. Many of us carry burdens around that no one knows about. It could be our desire for a child, a different job, the rebuilding of our marriage, our children and what they are going through in life. The list could go on and on.

Do you realize that God is just waiting for us to come to Him and share with Him these burdens? He longs to comfort us through all these difficult circumstances and to ultimately give us the desires that we long for. There is another scripture that tells us “I have come that they may have life and have it in abundance” (John 10:10).

God truly is the answer to all that we are facing. He is the one that can give us real joy. Ladies, understand that I am not saying that everything will be better if you just give it to the Lord. I am saying that by giving him your burdens, your load will be easier and you will be comforted. From personal experience I have learned that in the midst of great trials there can be joy in my soul. Some days it may be hard to find, but it is there. God wants us to turn to him and He will give us life more abundant.

Are you finding yourself in bitterness of soul today? Are there things that you are struggling with that have you overwhelmed and questioning God? My friend, why don’t you take time today to tell God what you are struggling with, really tell Him. He can handle whatever you have to say and I promise you that He will comfort you.
