Verse of the Day

"Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

~Matthew 6:19-21

Treasure in Heaven

Where is your treasure? I have heard this verse over and over again in my Christian walk. I thought it was a great verse and yes, I needed to do good things and nothing on this earth would go with me when I died. I thought it was pretty clear cut. I looked further into this verse though and one of the things that the commentator said that I never thought of was this. We are blessed with many things on earth and let’s just look at money as the example. When we use our money in ways such as tithing, helping others who are less fortunate than us, giving to other ministries and so on, the joy and satisfaction we get from doing that is what is carried with us to heaven. You see, our treasure is not the money, but what we do with it that matters and is eternal. Our focus needs to be what can we do with what God has given us to make a difference that lasts for eternity.

Now I know that many of us do not have a lot of money to help others and bless ministries, but we do have other gifts that are considered earthly treasures. I love to sing. I have been singing ever since I was big enough to crawl up on my grandfather’s knee. In fact, he was the one who encouraged me to sing. I have taken this gift and I have used it for the Lord. I sing every opportunity that I have. Now I could have chosen to use it in places other than the church or other Christian events. I didn’t though, and I believe that by choosing to use it to honor God, I have laid treasures up in heaven.

There are so many gifts and talents that you all have and by using them to honor God you are laying treasures up in Heaven. What we have on this earth we will not take with us. We can not take our homes, our money, our expensive cars, or jewelry. We will take with us what we have done for the Lord. I encourage you today to do something that will make an eternal difference, use what the Lord has given you to touch others’ lives.

Memorize this verse today:

"Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
~Matthew 6:19-21
