Verse of the Day

"But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished! "

~Luke 1: 43-45

Elizabeth and God's Timing

Today’s verses are spoken by Elizabeth. Earlier in the month, we did a devotional on Zechariah and how the Lord had revealed to him that He and Elizabeth would have a son and he was to be called John and he would be the forerunner to Jesus. Zechariah doubted this because of their old age and was made silent until the baby was born.

Elizabeth was a deeply spiritual woman. She lived in a society where a woman’s value was deeply rooted in bearing children. She was well up in years and had no children. In this society she was seen as less than a woman because she was barren. I believe she prayed earnestly, along with Zechariah, that the Lord would see fit for them to have a child. I am sure this was a very painful and lonely time for Elizabeth, but we see that she remained faithful to her God through it.

Imagine her excitement when Zechariah returned from the temple to relay to her that an angel told him they would bear a son. I don’t believe Elizabeth doubted for one minute that this was the truth. God heard their prayers and he hadn’t forgotten their faithfulness to Him. This part of the story always reminds me that God is in control. We can look at what we are facing and question it at the time wondering where God is in all of it and if He hears our prayers. Elizabeth’s story shows us a great example of God hearing prayers and answering them in His time and in His way.

Elizabeth is Mary’s cousin and as soon as Mary is told of her miracle of becoming the mother of Jesus, she is also told that Elizabeth is with child as well. Mary goes to visit Elizabeth to confirm that this really is happening. The scripture tells us that when the baby in Elizabeth heard Mary’s voice that the baby leaped for joy. Mary and Elizabeth must have just been giddy with excitement and wonder. I can not even imagine what the two of them must have been feeling. Elizabeth was the first woman to hear of the coming savior other then Mary. The realization that the babies they were carrying would change this world must have been overwhelming. I am not sure they could have fully comprehended it at the time. The timing that we see in this story is what I like to call a God thing.

When was the last time that you stopped and looked back over your life and saw the hand of God in situations and His timing? We so often want something and want it now and never stop to consider that just maybe now is not the right time for us to have it. Oh friend, God does know what is best and He also knows when the right time is for us to have it. Elizabeth was barren for years because it wasn’t the right time. God had something so amazing for Elizabeth and Zechariah. They just had to wait for it. Are you waiting for something today? Don’t give up, God has something amazing for you, you just have to wait for it.

Memorize this verse today:

"But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished! "
~Luke 1: 43-45
