Really Be Still
How often in your day are you still? And, I mean really still?
If you are anything like most women, you are probably not still for many minutes during your day. You are probably busy doing things for your job, your home, your children, your spouse, your friends, and maybe, if you have time, yourself. And, you may feel like you don’t have the luxury to be still. And, you’re probably thinking that if you take time to be still, that you aren’t doing something that you should be doing.
Psalm 46:10 tells us to be still and to know that He is God. I very firmly believe that we need to take time each day to be still. To take a moment and reflect on what is happening in our day, in our relationships, and in our lives. To take a moment to listen to what God may have for us that day. But, if we really want to reflect and to listen, then we have to be still.
You may be thinking that you don’t have time to be still. However, there are some simple things that you can do in your day to give yourself more time to think, pray, and listen. First, turn off the background noise. It seems that oftentimes we have the television on or the radio on or the internet in front of us while we’re trying to do something else. Sometimes, you just need to turn off the background noise so you can really focus on whatever you are reading or thinking. If you’re in the car, turn off the radio and talk to God while you’re driving. Or think about what it is that you want to focus on in your life. But, enjoy the silence.
In addition to turning off the background noise, commit to sitting in a quiet place for 10 minutes a day. Everyone can find 10 minutes in their day to sit still. Take these 10 minutes and read a verse, sit and think, and pray. I think you will find that these spare 10 minutes become vital to your day. And, you will start to really look forward to them and may even find that you have 20 or 30 minutes to do this.
Finally, I recommend that you devote some time at the end of each day to really reflecting on the day. Again, turn off the television and sit quietly and think about the day. We need to cherish the special things about each day. If you had a special conversation with someone, take time to think over it and cherish it. If you had a success or joy that day, then think about it and enjoy it. We so often rush through our joys and go to bed with the television on. Take time towards the end of your day to turn off the television and reflect on all the good of that day.
So, as we adopt new, healthier lifestyles for the New Year, I recommend that you find sometime to be still each day. Carve out a little time to sit and think. Turn off the background noise. And, dedicate your time to thinking, praying, and growing.
