Verse of the Day

"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it."

~Matthew 10:37-39

Losing Your Life

I remember reading these scriptures when I was younger and being very confused about loving, not loving, losing and finding. It wasn’t until I was a little older that I completely understood what Jesus was saying.

In order for us to really live the life that God has for us and to become the person that we should be, we must loosen our grip on our old life. In most of our lives we tend to focus on power, money, popularity and all of the material objects that we have obtained in life. The sad part is if most of us were to admit it, we would stand and loudly proclaim that those things have not made us very happy in life.

When we turn things over to God, He has a way of changing our priorities and by doing so, we can begin to enjoy life the way it was meant to be. When we refocus and begin living our lives for Him and for His glory we begin to see the joy and contentment we can have.

Let me give you an example. In our book club, we are reading about chasing lions. Many of these people that are mentioned in the book are wealthy individuals that give up everything to chase a crazy dream (crazy according to the world). We see though that they are so much more fulfilled and happy doing what God has called them to do. They reprioritized their lives by chasing a lion and I am sure that none of them would go back to their old lives.

We must be willing to give it all up for Him. If we aren’t, then we really need to look at our priorities. God tells us in verse 39 we must be willing to lose our life for when we are, we will find it. I am sure for many of us, especially those in the ministry, we have sacrificed in serving the Lord. I don’t know about you, but God has blessed me in numerous ways that have boggled my mind. I have found a life in Him that is not without pain and heartache, but is filled with God’s love and mercy and encouragement everyday. I have learned to be content and find joy because, in my heart of hearts, I know that God is in control and in the end it is all going to be okay.

I pray today that you have found a life in Christ that is filled with joy. I am not oblivious to the sadness of this world that we live in. I know that there will be many that read this today who are hurting and feel like there is no way they can feel joy. Can I please tell you that the joy comes from knowing that God loves you and that He is right there with you. He knows you are hurting friend. He just wants for you to call on Him and rest in Him today.

Memorize this verse today:

"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it."
~Matthew 10:37-39
