Being Content

Do you feel content with your life? Do you know the secret to contentment in this life?

Feeling content is defined as “feeling satisfaction with one’s possessions, status, or situation.” So, are you satisfied with your possessions, status or situation? In today’s verses in the book of Philippians, we read Paul’s description of his own contentment. And, he states that he has learned the secret of being content in any and every situation. So, what is this secret that Paul is talking about? What is his secret to contentment?

Like Paul, I know what it is like to have plenty and I know what it is like to be in need. And, I can say first hand that the secret to feeling content does not rest in your level of possessions or financial security. Your level of contentment rests in Jesus Christ and your relationship with Him and other believers. The secret to contentment that Paul is referring to is his relationship with the Lord. Through His life and ministry, Paul very clearly depicts a life of contentment and peace in His relationship with Jesus. He did not worry himself with the things of this world because he was focused clearly on eternity and telling others about the hope we have in Jesus Christ.

If you do not feel content today, then ask yourself what you are basing your contentment on. Do you know the secret to contentment that Paul is referring to? Or are you trying to find contentment in things of this world? In the words of Solomon, we will never have enough wealth or riches and we will always want to amass more (Ecclesiastes 5:10). So, if you are basing your contentment on those things, then I urge you to reevaluate.

We will never be satisfied or content in life based on our wealth, accomplishments, advancement, or anything of this world. The only thing that brings true contentment is a relationship with the Lord and living according to His will for your life. If you do not feel content or satisfied with your life today, then I urge you to examine what you are basing your contentment on. Is it a meaningful relationship with God and other believers or is it on fleshly desires? I strongly recommend you base your contentment on the former because a life based on the latter will never bring contentment. Evaluate your contentment today.
