Today's Devotional Thought
June 25, 2010 by Rachel Piferi
When is the last time you played? Played a game, a sport, a joke on someone? Do you play with your children?
In a recent research report on playing, children overwhelming preferred playing to watching television. Children from all over the world were asked to choose between playing with their friends or watching television and playing with their parents or watching television. And, 89% preferred playing with their friends over watching television and 73% preferred playing with their parents over watching television. Children love to play.
So, what about us parents? Unfortunately 45% of parents in this study reported that they do not have enough time to play with their children. And, even when they do play with them, they report that they are often distracted by other responsibilities with 26% reporting that they are too stressed to enjoy it.
As we talked about yesterday, we live in a culture that is full of stress. And, unfortunately friends, I am afraid we have done it to ourselves. We have overscheduled and overcommitted ourselves and we just don’t have time to play. And what is sad is that our children want to play with us and we just don’t have time.
But, we should make time. We should play.
In today’s verse, we see the recommendation to eat, drink, and be glad. And, we see that playing in this way can carry over into our work and into the other aspects of our life. By playing, we can rejuvenate ourselves to do our work with a refreshed spirit and heart. And by playing with our children, we can refresh our spirit while we build a stronger relationship with them.
Our children want to play and they want to play with us. Take time to play today and feel the refreshment that comes with being glad and feel the connections that you are building as you play.
