Today's Devotional Thought

I see many people in the church serving and serving in various areas. They are gifted in this area and it shows. They love people and want to help them in any way that they can. It can be teaching a Sunday School class, singing in the choir, maybe being on various committees that help people either by taking food to them or providing money and clothing for those who are in need. These are all great ministries to be involved in and the Bible tells us that we need to serve others like He served. We need to love those around us in our communities.
Another area that we give our all is in our families. If you have small children, then you know that so much of your life is put into them. They have many needs that only we can take care off. We make them food, we do their laundry, and we run them to appointments and play dates. If they are babies, then we spend a large part of our nights taking care of them as well. I know as mothers we love and treasure those moments. Now that my kids are a little older I remember those nights feeding them and cuddling with them and I miss them, to be honest.
My question is what about you? What do you do for yourself? I believe, and have learned, that it’s okay to be selfish sometimes! As a young mother I never wanted to be away from my family. I felt they were my responsibility and I needed to be there for them 24/7. I felt guilty if I left them to do something for myself. But, what I’ve found is that if we are constantly taking care of others in our families, communities, and churches, then we are bound to get emotionally and spiritually burned out. We need to stop sometimes and do something for ourselves that will refresh us and fill our emotional tanks so that we can go back and take care of those we love.
The first thing that I suggest is getting up ½ hour earlier than your family and spend time with the Lord. That quiet time before everyone else wakes up will make a huge difference in your day. The Lord will also help you to stay calm throughout your day and to handle things as they come. You will be amazed at how you can accomplish so much more when you are up early and have laid your day before the Lord.
When searching for things to do for you look for things that don’t cost a lot of money, but will help you recharge your battery. You can do things like, meet a friend for coffee, get away to a park and read a good book for a while, go have your nails done or a massage. My favorite is to taking a nice long hot bath with candles and soft music playing. When you set some time aside for you, you will find that you are a better wife, mother and friend.
So ladies, yes we are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. So if we take time to do for them then we must also set time aside for ourselves. Do something today that is just for you and make sure that some of that time is spent with the Lord.
