Alone & Praying
When was the last time you spent dedicated time alone and prayed? Has it been a while? Are you thinking that you just don’t have the luxury of withdrawing from life and spending time alone?
As you read through the gospels, you will often see it recorded that Jesus went off alone and prayed. In today’s passage, we see this brief verse located after Jesus healed the man with leprosy and after He called Peter, James, and John to be disciples of His. The verse right before this one states that the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses (v. 15).
As you reflect on these verses, I am sure you can imagine the demands that Jesus must have been under as the word of His ministry spread. Jesus knew what it felt like to be needed by so many. And, He gladly served. But, He also knew the importance of getting renewal from His Father so that He could serve others. And, He dedicated time to being alone, praying to the Lord, and refreshing Himself so that He could better serve others in His life.
On those days when you feel overwhelmed and feel that everyone is demanding something of you, remember these verses. Reflect on how Jesus must have felt as the word of his miracles and healings began to spread. Reflect on how high a demand He must have been in. And, remember how even Jesus needed to retreat from others and spend time in prayer.
Refresh yourself today and spend time alone in prayer. Remember that it is okay to occasionally retreat from the demands that are placed on you and renew yourself through prayer. While daily time with the Lord is necessary, it is also necessary to plan more extended time where you can really refresh and deeply connect to the Lord. Plan an evening each week where you go to a place where you can be alone and pray. If you have children, then find a babysitter or exchange an evening each week with your spouse or with a friend where you can both have an evening to spend alone in prayer. Find some way to be able to refresh yourself weekly with dedicated alone time. Even Jesus needed time away from the demands of life to get strength and renewal from the Lord. Do the same today.
