Verse of the Day

"Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ took hold of me. Join with others in following my example, brothers, take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you."

~Philippians 3:12 &17

Follow My Example

Do you have someone in your life who you look up to? Someone who sharpens you and whose example you follow? The words in today’s verses are being spoken by Paul. Now, those of us who grew up in the church and have studied the Bible, see Paul as a giant in the faith. He was radically saved and he changed the world. He was a man on a mission. He traveled and spoke to everyone. His deepest desire was to point people to Jesus.

What I love about Paul is that, in the second verse, it sounds like he is saying “hey look at me, follow my example, I have it all together.” But, when you look at the first verse you realize that Paul doesn’t have it all together. In fact, he is pursuing Christ and reaching towards heaven, our final goal, an eternal life with our Lord. He is still learning and growing everyday, just like us. Paul wanted the people of Philippi to have a mature relationship with the Lord, to experience true joy. In fact, Paul was in prison when he was writing this letter to the church and in spite of his location, he found pure joy in the Lord. Circumstances didn’t play a part in Paul’s joy. It was all based on his relationship with Jesus Christ.

We face distractions everyday that will take our eyes off of Jesus and onto our circumstances. I think the key to Paul being such a good example and what we can learn from him, is that pressing towards the goal means to have focus on only Christ. When we take the time each day to be in His Word, to pray and place our selves in places where we can be strengthened in the Lord, this will help us keep on focus. When our focus is where it needs to be, then God will take care of the other areas of our life. Now, this doesn’t mean that we slack off on planning and say it will all work out. We need to allow God to work out His plan for our lives and we need to get self out of the way!!

Today’s devotion started by asking who do you look up to. My next question is, are you leading a life where you are a good example for someone else? Are you striving towards Christ’s likeness? I have heard so many times in my life the phrase, “I may be the only Jesus that someone sees.” When you really take that to heart it can change you. I want to be like my Savior. I know that I fall miserably short, but I want to strive to be like Him everyday until I make heaven my home. I hope today that you feel that same way. Let me encourage you to find yourself in the Word today even if it is for a few minutes to find a scripture that lifts your heart and keeps you smiling.

Memorize this verse today:

"Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ took hold of me. Join with others in following my example, brothers, take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you."
~Philippians 3:12 &17
