Today's Devotional Thought

Thermometer or Thermostat?
In a devotional I was reading recently, I saw the question, “Are you a thermometer or a thermostat?” It was an interesting question that I didn’t quite understand until I read further. The author went on to describe the difference between a thermometer and a thermostat. A thermometer goes up and down depending on the temperature in the room. And, a thermostat knows the temperature it wants and sets the climate. While a thermometer rides the changes in the room, a thermostat stays steady and affects the room.
Are you a thermometer or a thermostat? When changes occur in your life, do you just ride the emotional roller coaster that accompanies those circumstances or do you stand firmly planted in your faith and set the tone of the circumstance?
It is very easy to get caught up in our daily circumstances and ride an emotional roller coaster of reactions to them. But friends, you have more control that that. You are not merely a thermometer that goes up and down based on the weather of your life. God has created in us the ability to plan and judge and control our emotions and thoughts. And, one of the best ways that we can do that is by keeping our focus on God. Just as Paul chose to worship and sing when in prison, we must choose to worship the Lord and focus on Him throughout our good and bad days.
As a daughter of the King, you are safe and you can rely on that safety when you begin to experience the daily hassles and stressors of this world. Do not merely react to what is going on around you. Stand firm in your faith and trust in God, that He will protect you and see you through every daily and life hassle. And, as you are relying on Him to see you through everything in life, fix your mind on Him and His promises. In doing so, you will set the climate of your life and will not merely ride the emotional roller coaster of life’s hassles.
As you go through your day today, stand confidently in the knowledge that you have control over how you approach situations. Ask the Lord to help you control your emotional responses and your thoughts as you encounter all circumstances. Choose today to set the climate in your life. Choose to be a thermostat and live freely in the confidence that comes from trusting in the Lord.
