Verse of the Day

"Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing."

~1 Peter 3:8-9

Do Good

Today’s verses lay out for us how we should treat one another as believers. As we can see, we should live in harmony, be sympathetic, loving, compassionate, and humble. What do each of these mean?

Harmony is the first characteristics listed and I see this as going after the same goal. We need to all agree that our biggest goal is to reach others for Jesus Christ. The way we reach others oftentimes becomes an issue and can disrupt harmony. But, we must all be mindful that we have the same goal and we need to be careful that we are always striving for harmony and unity in our churches.

How can we be sympathetic to one another? This is huge!! In our churches there are so many hurting people and it can sometimes be difficult to meet all their needs. I believe we need to reach out to others and be sensitive to what they are facing and strive to meet their needs if we can. When you have a compassionate heart, you sometimes feel as though there aren’t enough hours in the day to help others. Ladies, please understand that you are only one person and if you see a need and know that someone else may be better equipped to help, then allow that person to help and give them the chance to be a blessing to someone. We are not responsible for every hurting person in the church. God will guide you to who you need to help and we in turn can pray for others who are hurting.

Being compassionate is when we are being affectionately sensitive to what others are facing. We need to show others that we care and that we are there if they need someone to talk with or pray with or just to be with. Everyone needs someone to be there for them, especially when they are hurting.

How can we show humility? I think this is an important one as well. We should be able to encourage each other and rejoice for each other when good things happen. This can be difficult. There are many of us that struggle with jealousy or maybe we have just fallen on hard times so when we do see someone flourishing in life, we aren’t so quick to congratulate them and be happy for them. We may wonder why not us?? True humility comes when we can put ourselves aside and really be sincerely happy for others when great things happen to them or for them.

God spoke these things through Peter. We need to be examples to all of those around us of God’s love and when we display harmony, sympathy, compassion and humility, then we have shown them God.

Memorize this verse today:

"Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing."
