Be Still and Know

If I have learned anything as I've aged, it is that life often doesn't turn out the way we expect it to. I've not come to that truth easily. In fact, I think most people who have gotten there have done so through much wrestling and letting go. It's a painful wrestle to get that truth to settle in your heart.

Relationships are not what we expected.

Jobs and callings are not what we expected.

Seasons and situations are not what expected.

Life just flat out isn't what we expected it would be.

And if we're being honest, our individual relationships with the Lord are not what we expected either.

It's all harder than we ever expected.

But, if we wrestle past the hard, life with Jesus is also more glorious, more joy-filled, and more abundant than we could have ever expected as well.

And you know what else?

Life may be different than we expected, but it's not different than God expected. It is exactly how He knew it was going to be for you. And, the glorious part of that is that because He wasn't taken by surprise, He already had a plan for how He was going to work it all around for His glory and your good.

He's got your unexpected.

He's been a master at it from the very beginning of time. It didn't take God by surprise that Adam and Eve sinned. It didn't take Him by surprise that the serpent deceived them. That despite all they had, they'd risk it all on the temptation of disbelief.

Ephesians 1 tells us that God had a plan for redemption through His Son before the world was even created. Before Eve's lips tasted the forbidden fruit of the garden, God knew He was going to send His Son to die to redeem that mistake.

He knew.

And He created us anyway.

He knew.

And He loved us anyway.

He knew.

And He was willing to come and die for us anyway.

No, life doesn't quite turn out like we expect sometimes. But just because we didn't expect it, doesn't mean that God doesn't have it all covered. Covered in the blood. From the beginning of time.

Today, as you sit still in the truths of this Christmas season, savor this one: What may be unexpected to us, is not unexpected to God. God knew exactly how He was going to redeem the mistake Adam and Eve would make. Before they were even created, He knew about Christmas. He knew about Mary. He knew about Joseph. He knew about the Wiseman. He knew about the Shepherds. He knew about Herod. He knew about Peter and Paul and Martin Luther and Billy Graham.

He knew about you.

And He knew how He was going to get the message to you that He loves you, He redeems you, and He has a plan for all of your "unexpected's."

You can truly be still this Christmas season and in all seasons because you know He is God. And in being God, He knows it all, is powerful enough to handle it all, and loves you so much that He thinks of you in it all.

Christmas. It may have looked a little unexpected to those around, but it was not at all unexpected to God. In fact, it was planned. Just like that. To redeem it all.

Memorize this verse today:

"Be still and know that I am God."
~Psalm 46:10
