Verse of the Day

"At the top of the stairway stood the Lord, he said, “I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants. Your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth! They will spread out in all directions to the west and the east, to the north and the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants. What’s more, I am with you and I will protect you wherever you go, One day I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you."

Has God Spoken to You?

Today I want to talk about how God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. There is a passage of scripture in Genesis 28 that talks about Jacob having a dream and in that dream God promises him that his descendants will be as many as the dust of the earth and that he will protect him wherever he goes.

You know what I love about this? I love the fact that up to this point, Jacob was a deceiver. He had taken the birthright from Esau and then he stole his father’s blessing from Esau. He pretended (with his mother’s help) to be Esau so that he would receive the blessing instead of his brother. As I was reading through this familiar story of Jacob deceiving his father to get the blessing meant for Esau, I hesitated and began to think about how thankful I am that God uses sinners. We all have times in our lives that we have made mistakes and maybe we find ourselves fleeing because we are scared. But as you see with Jacob, sometimes God comes after us and he lets us know that he still loves us.

This moment for Jacob was what I like to call a defining moment. He had fled his home because he deceived his brother by stealing his blessing from their father. Esau said he would kill him and Jacob had to run. But, once again Rebekah lied and said it was so that Jacob could go and marry a good woman. In the midst of this fleeing, God stops Jacob in his tracks and tells him that he will bless his family and that he will protect him. God tells him that he will not leave him until he has given him everything he has promised (a promise he made to his father and grandfather too). That is a pretty strong statement from God. Jacob wakes up and is overwhelmed and immediately wants to build a memorial.

This moment in Jacobs’s life changes everything. He tells the Lord that if all he promised comes true he will tithe 10%. Let me ask you this. Do you think that Jacob had a relationship with the Lord before this encounter? I really don’t. I think that much like some of our children he believed because his parents did and he was surrounded by it, but until this moment he hadn’t experienced it for himself. I believe he was a changed man that day.

Has God spoken to you? Have you had a moment that changed your life forever? Many of us might be sitting here thinking that we have messed up. Like Jacob, maybe we have been deceivers and we don’t feel that we deserve for God to do amazing things in our life. Let me remind you sweet friends that the Bible is full of people who have messed up, but God forgave them. Jacob went on to father the twelve tribes of Israel and one of those tribes was the line from which Jesus was born.

God uses sinners and when we come to him and we trust him and follow him in obedience he can do extraordinary things through us.

Memorize this verse today:

"At the top of the stairway stood the Lord, he said, “I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants. Your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth! They will spread out in all directions to the west and the east, to the north and the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants. What’s more, I am with you and I will protect you wherever you go, One day I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you."
