Today's Devotional Thought

Love Must Be Sincere
I just loved the devotion that Wendy wrote yesterday. Didn’t you?
For those of you who do not remember it or were unable to read it, it was on love and how love must be sincere. It made me think about all of the things that can keep us from loving sincerely. Maybe you have loved with sincerity before and the other person betrayed that love and left you heartbroken. Maybe you have never received sincere love in your life, so you just don’t know how to love others with sincerity. Or maybe you have placed other things in your life ahead of others, like money, careers, or possessions.
When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, he said that it was to love God first and then to love others. Love is central to Jesus’ teachings and to his commandment for how we live. And as Paul writes to the Romans, this love must be sincere.
I encourage you to examine what it is in your life that may be keeping you from loving others in your life today with sincerity, honesty, and truth. If it betrayal and hurt in your past, then ask the Lord to send someone to you who can be trusted with your sincere love and ask him to lower those walls around your heart that you have placed there for protection. If you have never been loved with sincerity, then I encourage you to study Jesus and how he loved others as a model for sincere, honest, and true love. And, then model how he loves others. And if you have many idols in your life that keep you from loving God and loving others, then pray that God would help you relinquish those idols and put your priorities in the order that they need to be: loving God and then loving people above anything else.
As Wendy said yesterday, love must be sincere. Examine what may be keeping you from loving sincerely today.
