Today's Devotional Thought

King Solomon, after the temple was built, asked God to establish a provision for his people when they went astray and sinned against Him. God answered King Solomon by giving him four things that the people must do to make things right with Him again. (1) He wanted them to humble themselves and admit the sin that they committed. (2) He wanted them to come to Him and ask forgiveness. (3) He desired for His people to seek Him continually. And the final one is (4) He wanted His people to turn from their sinful behavior.
These instructions, found in today’s scripture verse, is just as much for us today as for them. King Solomon wanted the Israelites to see God for who He was and for what he had done, not only for them but for their ancestors. And most importantly, He desired for them to follow God’s commands. When you follow God’s commands He blesses not only you but your families as well. The Israelites were benefiting from their ancestors being faithful to God and following His commandments.
God had told King Solomon and the Israelites in 1 Kings 9:3-9 that He would always watch over the temple for it was dear to His heart. But he also told them that if they didn’t follow his commands that people would pass by the temple and be appalled at the sight of it and they would say that the people of God turned their backs on Him and how sad it is that the temple has been left in ruins.
God has to discipline His children when they do wrong and we see that in how God tells them He will take the very thing that is dear to his heart, the temple, and let it look desolate and run down because of their disobedience. But we also learn that God is a God of redemption and restoration and He makes a way for us to return to Him and seek His forgiveness.
When we think of seeking forgiveness, there are many of us who will say all the right things to God. But will we mean them and change? True repentance is evidenced by a change in our behaviors. That change will come and stay when we seek God daily through prayer and reading His Word and living out the things we learn, like how to live in obedience to Him.
I believe it is time that we humble ourselves before our Lord and repent and start living lives that honor Him. We need to live lives that are radically obedient and sold out to Him. When we do that, it is life changing and others will see it I promise. The best part is that God will bless you in a variety of ways for your faithfulness and obedience to Him.
