Verse of the Day

"How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word. I have tried to find you—don’t let me wander from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."

~Psalm 119:9-11

Purity

Purity. How do we teach our children the importance of purity? Especially when everywhere we look we see a depraved world. We live in a contaminated society and it gets harder everyday to protect our children from what this world says is okay and acceptable.

I have a 16 year old daughter and I have spent the last few years scared of how she will respond to what society says is acceptable. I hear the stories of kids who think premarital sex is okay and the rest of the stories that I have heard I won’t even repeat. My husband and I talk to her very frankly about the importance of purity and we encourage her to be in the Word and to discover for herself His truths.

When we are in Scripture we gain the strength and courage we need to stay pure. I believe purity can also pertain to what we watch on television, the type of music we listen to and even the kinds of people that we choose to spend the majority of our time with. God’s Word is very clear and it is a guide for our lives and when we are in it, memorizing it, and hiding it in our hearts, we will gain the wisdom we desire to make the decisions we need to make when it comes to purity in all areas of our lives.

Understand me when I say I don’t believe for one second that it is easy to live in this world and remain pure in every area. Media has made it easier than ever for our eyes, ears and hearts to take in things that we shouldn’t, things that will take our eyes off of Jesus. Turn your television to any channel and I guarantee you will hear and see something that is contradictory to Scripture. Turn on your radio and you will hear songs that describe things that we shouldn’t be saying or doing.

Psalm 119:11 says “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Be in the Word today. Know what it says so that you can live your life in a way that honors God and in a way that shows others that we can live a life of purity with God’s help.

So I close with the same question: how can a young person stay pure? By meditating on God’s Word and hiding it in their hearts.

Memorize this verse today:

"How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word. I have tried to find you—don’t let me wander from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."
~Psalm 119:9-11
