Today's Devotional Thought

I was giving my older daughter a bath the other morning and she said something that just stopped me in my tracks. I don’t usually give her a bath (she’s 7 years old) because she has gotten to the age where she can take her own showers and actually prides herself in her independence. But this particular morning, she said that she wanted my help.
I was washing her hair and having her lay back into the water to get all of the soap out. And, as I was scrubbing all of the shampoo out of her hair, she looked at me with her face just barely peeking out of the water, and said, “I love how I can just lay here and be still and you do all the work. It’s nice.”
My independent, self-sufficient daughter was realizing the beauty of being still and letting someone bigger than her and more skilled than her do the work as she just laid there, still.
How true this is in our own lives too.
As I thought of her comment, I thought how beautifully it captures what God asks us to do in our own lives. And I thought of one of my favorite verses, “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). While he certainly calls us to action at times, oftentimes God asks us to just be still and let him do the work that only he can do.
If you look at the word used here for “be still,” it can be translated to let go, to stop striving, to relax. And the name for God used here is Elohim, the creator and judge of the universe. It is the same name for God that is used in Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning, God (Elohim) created the heavens and the Earth.”
Why can you relax, stop striving, and let go? Because GOD is GOD. He is the creator and judge of the universe and is all powerful. And, he can do all the work in whatever situation you need to turn over to him. And quite frankly, he can do it better than you can.
My daughter was right. It is so nice when you realize that someone greater than you is in control and can do all the work that you just simply can’t do, don’t have the strength to do, or are not able to do. And that all you have to do is be still. Friends, whatever it is that you need to let go of today, I pray that you can cling to this verse and know that you can let it go and relax because the God of the universe is in control.
