Today's Devotional Thought
October 19, 2011 by Wendy Foreman
Today's verse is a pretty heavy verse and it is one I studied yesterday while working on the Bible study Breaking Free by Beth Moore. If any of you out there have done Breaking Free than you know how amazing of a study it is. It is a must! (That is my plug for Beth Moore's studies).
There are so many things in our lives, all of us, that stem from our family history. There could be alcoholism, anger, depression, low self esteem, insecurity issues, perfectionism and the list goes on and on. We are faced with these things every day in our lives and we suffer from them. We can even feel like we are in bondage because of them. They are passed down very subtly sometimes (and sometimes genetically). We feel like they are a part of our history and therefore we can't fight them. "That's just the way I am," is what we tell people. In Beth's study, she has shown through Scripture that that statement ("That's just the way I am.") is a lie of Satan.
I know that many of you reading today have experienced things in your life that have led to certain behaviors and perhaps you are ashamed of them. And maybe you would rather put dealing with them on the top shelf because that is just easier than facing it head on and dealing with it.
You know what happens when you do that though?
Those things that have been passed down to you through your parents or grandparents will get passed onto your children and grandchildren if you don't ask God in HIS strength to free you from them.
I'm not saying that it is easy or that just praying will free you from them right away. There will be a lot of prayer, sweat, tears and weariness but the outcome will be amazing. You will have been freed from your bondage and your children and grandchildren and the generations to come will be blessed because of it.
Satan would like nothing better then for us to stay in our bondage. Friends, if we don't fight, if we don't work through things that have been passed down through generations, then the cycle will continue. Do you want your children and your children's children to have to deal with captivity because you just couldn’t allow God to help you to overcome it? God is waiting for you to raise your hands and give to Him the very things that are holding you captive. He won't just take them. He wants you to give them up willingly because if he just took them, you will eventually just take them back and be in bondage again.
Ladies, make the choice today to break free from the things in your life that you know are keeping you from true abundance in Christ. It is so worth it!!!!
