Your Want-To

"I don't want to." I hear that statement come out of the mouths of one of my young children often. I have three of them and invariably, I am always asking one of them to do something they just don't want to do.

Oh how I get tired of hearing that phrase. And I tell them that sometimes in life, there are things you just have to.

And then one day, as I was praying about some changes happening in my life, I heard myself utter that dreaded phrase to the Lord, "But God, I just don't want to."

Ugh.

The very same phrase that I have tried to get my children to stop saying, I was uttering to God. And it was in that moment that I felt like such a child.

How many times do we tell the Lord, we just don't want to? We don't want to be the bigger person. We don't want to leave our comfort zone. We don't want to take on one more thing that we just don't think we have the strength for. We don't want to let go of a dream.

Oh Lord, I just don't want to.

And no sooner was the phrase uttered into the airspace of my prayer that I heard the Lord say back to me, "But you have to. And not just because, I said so. But, because it is truly better for you."

As we develop in spiritual discipline, I believe one of the keys is replacing our "want-to's" with simply obeying his commands. Honestly, it doesn't matter if I want to do a certain behavior. I do it because I want to obey the Lord.

Sometimes, I feel the Lord leading me to do something and at times, I still tell the Lord that I don't want to {he knows it anyways}. But, I am learning to follow it with, "But, I still will because while I may not want to do that particular behavior, I do want to obey you. And Lord, please change my want-to."

Friends, the next time you find yourself uttering, "But, I don't want to," remember how child-like that sounds to the Lord. And then ask yourself, even if you don't want to do that behavior, do you want to obey the Lord?

Oh friends, I am really finding that it is so much better to go with God's commands for my life and not to go with my "want-to's."

Obey the Lord, friends. It really is that simple. And it really is the best way.

Memorize this verse today:

"Love the LORD your God and keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws and his commands always."
~Deuteronomy 11:1
