Sometimes It Just Hurts
I was listening to a mother and daughter talking in a restaurant the other day and I overheard the mom say to her young daughter, "Sometimes, it just hurts."
I'm not sure what they were talking about, but I can imagine that this mom could have been talking to her teenaged daughter about a broken heart or maybe a rejection from a friend or maybe she didn't get onto the sports team that she wanted. Regardless of the specifics of her situation, the mother was trying to help her daughter see that sometimes life just hurts.
As I have gone through this week, I have spent time studying various things and talking with different people about all sorts of life topics and I have come to the same conclusion: Sometimes, life just hurts. And sometimes, there is nothing you can do about it, but wait it out.
I think we live in such an instant gratification, feel good society that we don't always expect to hurt. And when we do hurt, we want it to go away really fast. So, we run to whatever or whoever can promise us a quick restoration to happiness.
But friends, that simply is not realistic. And, it is just not Scriptural.
In my studies lately, I keep seeing verses related to waiting and not giving up. Some of the verses relate to not giving up on good works and that God will reward you for them, if you do not give up (Galations 6:9). In Jeremiah, I recently read about waiting on the Lord to restore the blessings of Israel and Judah after a period of punishment that they were going to receive. And, in numerous other places, I have seen God and others urging us to wait on him.
Jesus told us that in this world we would have trials (John 16:33). But, we are also told numerous places that we can have hope. Not in this world, but that someday all of the pain of life will subside and we will have eternal happiness. But in the meantime, sometimes life is just going to hurt.
I hope you are not in a season of life hurting. But if you are, please know that you are not alone and if you are searching for a quick fix, please know that you may not receive quick restoration of happiness. Some things that we experience in this life hurt and they hurt for a while. But, please be comforted that God walks with you during your pain, he feels your pain, he will use that pain to help someone else, and he promises you that someday you will not hurt.
If you are in a season of hurt, ask the Lord today to show you his presence in that hurt. Ask him to show you what you need to learn and share with others. And, thank him for his constant presence in all of your life experiences and that one day, none of us will hurt any longer.
