Today's Devotional Thought

Kisses of Peace
Wendy and I are currently away from our hometown as we attended a Women's Ministry Luncheon hosted by Angela Thomas on Tuesday. About a year ago, we ran a devotional that was inspired by one of Angela's talks and I want to share that with you again today. Enjoy!
I love the changing of the seasons. In fact, I just love that during a year, we can anticipate and enjoy the coming of each season and then just as we tire of that season, another season appears with all of its rewards. When I think about each season, I love each one for different reasons. I love the slower pace of life in the summertime that involves sleeping in, not worrying about homework, and going to the beach with my kids. I love that when we have tired of the summer heat and fully exhausted the beach that it is time to get back to a more structured routine of school and football. I love when the fall continues and it starts to get cool and the leaves start to change. I love when cool weather becomes the norm and forecasts of snow and snow days emerge and Christmas approaches. I love when winter turns into spring and we shed the sweaters and boots for flip flops and capris. We get to take the convertible out of the garage and just enjoy the sunshine and farms of southeastern Virginia. Everyone seems to be rejuvenated by the flowers in bloom that beautifully remind us of God's creation and recreation of life.
Yesterday, I had a few hours to myself and I took a beach chair out onto my deck and just sat in the sun and read. It has just begun to get warm in southeastern Virginia and I am just soaking in the sunshine every chance I get. And as I went outside yesterday, before I opened my book, I just laid my head back and soaked in the sun as if I was soaking in God's love. It was warm (I had forgotten what sun felt like), I had a moment when no one needed anything from me, and I got to bask in God's love and warmth for a moment in my day. It was a moment that Angela Thomas describes as a "kiss of peace."
In her writings and talks, Angela discusses how God gives us quick "kisses of peace" on this Earth that are a taste of what's to come in eternity. She talked about how these things are brilliant glimpses into God's peace and what our life in heaven will be like. And for a moment yesterday, I got a kiss of peace from God in the middle of a busy life and it was a spectacular glimpse of what heaven may be like.
Every now and then I feel those kisses of peace from God. And it is always when I need them most. While yesterday's came in the form of basking in the warm sun and breathing deeply, these kisses can take any form. But, I find that oftentimes I have to invite those kisses into my life. It is so easy to get consumed by housework and kids and work and meetings and friends that we don't take time to be kissed by the Lord. And sometimes, he just wants us to pause in our day and ask him to fill us.
Yesterday, as I was deciding how to spend my free time, I made a conscious decision to leave the dishes in the sink and sit for a moment with the Lord. And let him remind me of his presence, faithfulness, and love. And, he kissed his daughter with the peace that only he can provide.
Ask God to give you a kiss of peace in your day and then sit still for a moment so that he can fill you up to face your day.
