Today's Devotional Thought

Afraid to Be Still
Are you afraid to be still? Afraid that if you stop being busy that your mind will dwell on things that you're trying to forget? Afraid that if you sit still and ask the Lord to speak to you that He may reveal things to you that are too painful to address? Afraid that He may ask you to do something that you really don't want to do, but you know down deep that you are supposed to?
Oftentimes in therapy or self-help, the recommendation is made to "keep busy" in times of stress or pain or heartache. It is thought that keeping your mind focused on other things will keep you from focusing on the pain or the worry associated with the problem that you are trying to avoid. And overall, it works pretty well. Staying busy is distracting. It is distracting from the pain. It is distracting from the worry. Distracting from the things that may be too difficult to face.
But, it can also be distracting from hearing the voice of God.
Are you staying busy so you don't have to worry about some issue in your life or face a heartache you are experiencing? And if you are, are you shutting out God in the process?
Let me challenge you to be still today. Bravely face the silence that could bring painful memories, reveal areas of your life that need to be changed, or present a call from the Lord to do something for Him. And while you are being still, invite the Lord to sit beside you. Invite Him to help you quiet your mind and focus on what is important: your relationship with Him and growing into everything He wants you to be.
In today's busy world, we tend to distract ourselves from the things that we do not want to deal with. But in doing so, we don't grow in ourselves, in our relationships with others, or in our relationship with the Lord. We must take time to be still and face those things that we are afraid to face. God is waiting for you to be still so that He can complete His work in you. Give Him time today!
