Let Your Light Shine Down
It was really warm yesterday. It wasn't a humid warm. It was an enjoyable warm. You know, the type of day where you put all the windows down in the car, open the sunroof and just sing!
And that is exactly what we did on the way back from lunch.
I was feeling a little daring yesterday, so I took my three kids and Wendy's two out to lunch. Summertime boredom has really hit my household, so getting out, even for a quick lunch, is a good activity for the day. And on the way home, Wendy's son connected his ipod to my sound system and started DJ'ing for the six of us.
It was fun.
And with the windows down, the sunroof open, and our hair flying, we all sang and danced as we drove home.
It was a moment in time that just made my heart smile.
When I got home, my daughters wanted to watch a newly rented movie, the boys went outside to play basketball, and I sat on my front porch in ear shot of them all and read a little of One Thousand Gifts. The sounds of my daughters playing and the bouncing basketball were great background sounds to my afternoon reading about gratitude and savoring the sweet moments of life.
And then my youngest came out onto the front porch with my son's play guitar. She was grinning as she was pretending to play.
As she pretended to strum the guitar and bounced to the beat, I heard the song that plays on that toy guitar for the first time. I had never really heard the lyrics before. And, as she grinned in the sunshine with a breeze gently blowing, I heard:
Whoa...heaven let your light shine down...
The lyrics made me stop in my tracks. What perfect lyrics for that moment and for that day. From the fun singing in the car to the sounds of a bouncing basketball to a grinning toddler on a guitar, heaven's light was shining down. In the middle of the stress and pain and hardship and struggle of this world, God was sending his light down to brighten my day.
Oh how I am starting to see so powerfully how, in big ways and in little ways, he shines his glory upon us to make this world a little more bearable.
I pray that you have moments in your day that you can savor as heaven's light shining down into a bleak world. I truly believe that God sends these moments to brighten our days. To send some heaven light down to illuminate our paths towards him. A little piece of his glory amidst a fallen world.
Take some time today and notice heaven's light. Roll down the windows and let a 10 year old play DJ. It will make you smile, I guarantee it. And it will turn an ordinary day into one filled with God's blessings.
