Verse of the Day

"O LORD, you have searched me and you know me."

~Psalm 139:1

Today's Devotional Thought

He Sees

He was about 30 years old. Kneeling in front of the wall, gently rubbing the name engraved on it with the fingertips of his right hand. His head was down and his eyes were closed. The woman who was with him was rubbing his back as he was clearly reflecting on the person listed on the wall.

We were in lower Manhattan walking around the site of the World Trade Center buildings. It is a big area and when you approach, a solemnness and sense of significance overtakes you. It has been nearly 11 years and yet, it feels like yesterday.

Especially to those who lost a loved one on that day.

As I watched this young man and the others around the area, I could not help but think about all of the stories that were around me. It is a very busy area being that it is the financial district. And, at 5:30 p.m., there appeared to be a mass exodus of the area as many business men and women were walking toward the Path station to go home. Thousands of people leaving the city to go home.

An area rich with importance, significance, and stories.

And God knows each story.

As I watched the many people in the area, I could not help but think of what the many stories must be. We literally saw thousands of people bustling about and it overwhelmed me to think of the millions of people in this city alone who God loves, knows intimately, and sees each day.

El Roi, the God who sees, knows each one of their stories. Cares intimately about each one. And is thinking about them and the plans he has for them.

It absolutely overwhelms me to think that we serve a God who is capable of caring individually for each one of his precious creation. The man kneeling at the wall in mourning, the businessman leaving the city to go home to his family, and the family of five touring the city together.

He is the God who sees. The God who cares. The God who plans. And, the God who loves each one of his beautiful and uniquely created children.

Even in a city of millions, God knows each name, each concern, each life.

Whether you live in a city of millions or a small town of hundreds, I pray today that you feel uniquely and specifically loved by this almighty God we serve. He truly knows you, sees you, and specifically loves you.

Memorize this verse today:

"O LORD, you have searched me and you know me."
~Psalm 139:1
