Verse of the Day

"No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it."

~I Corinthians 10:13

Today's Devotional Thought

No You Won't

Yesterday, I wrote on the concept of God upholding us when we feel as if we are being asked to endure something that is beyond what we think we can bear. And I could not stop thinking about that devotion all day yesterday. It was actually one that I had written a couple of years ago and had tweaked it a little for yesterday. And, I just kept thinking about the concept of being pushed to our limit all day long yesterday.

And then, as I was falling asleep last night, God woke me up with a word.

Ladies, let me tell you, when he wakes you up with a word, you know it. And, last night, around 11:30 p.m., I got out of bed, got my laptop out, and started researching I Corinthians 10:13. I read it in several different versions. I looked at the intricacies of the Greek in that verse and the verses surrounding it.

And, as I meditated on that verse, I just thought about everything that I feel pushed to the limit on. All the things that I feel are testing me beyond what I can bear.

Ladies, I have several things that I feel like I could just die under the weight of, if I let them really weigh me down. And, I started listing things to the Lord. I got very specific with him and each time I told him what I thought I just could not bear any longer and would just die under the weight of, he simply said, "No you won't."

Lord, I feel like I will just die under the weight of the regret over how I behaved in a past situation.

No you won't.

Lord, I feel like I will just die under the weight of the remorse I feel over how I treated that person.

No you won't.

Lord, I feel like I will just die under the weight of the anxiety I feel in the ambiguity of this situation.

No you won't.

Lord, I feel like I will just die under the weight of the sorrow I feel for that sweet woman's situation that I've just talked to.

No you won't.

Lord, I feel like I will just die under the weight of the burden I feel to do your will in this uncertain situation.

No you won't.

It didn't matter what I cried out to him, his answer was the always the same to me.

You will endure.

I Corinthians 10:13 tells us that "No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it."

Regret. Remorse. Anxiety. Sorrow. Burden. Those are certainly not new emotions, initiated with me. They are all very common and I dare say that you are feeling some, if not all of them, right alongside me. And, I also imagine that you can be very easily tempted to stay right there, with me, in the muck of those stifling, weighty, suffocating emotions. Very tempted to say, these situations and emotions are more than I can bear.

Staying in regret, remorse, anxiety, sorrow, or burden.

And, not taking the way of escape that the Lord has promised us in this passage.

Sweet friends, you do not have to live in regret, remorse, anxiety, sorrow, burden, or any other thing that feels unbearable. God has provided a way of escape in the promises of His Word. His forgiveness. His redemption. His peace. And, his shouldering our burdens are all promised to us.

And by focusing on those promises, and not the stifling emotions, you can endure.

Oh sweet friends, I know it is not easy to press forward when we are being pushed to our limit emotionally. We are very easily tempted to stay in the negative. But, the next time you are tempted to say, "Lord, I am just going to die under the weight of this burden," hear him say deeply into your soul, "No you won't, my child. You will endure."

And, you won't die under the weight of it, because you will choose the way of escape from that weighty burden in the promises of His Word.

I don't know what it is that is leaving you feel like you are being pushed to the limit today. But, you will not die under the weight of it, sweet friends. You will endure.

Memorize this verse today:

"No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it."
