Verse of the Day

"Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.'"

Option Three

When we hear the Christmas story or we discuss it, Joseph is not normally the individual that we talk about or concentrate on. Everyone talks about Mary, the angel Gabriel, the shepherds and wise men and even King Herod. How often have we thought about how Joseph felt in all of this?

Joseph was a man of integrity and he loved Mary very much. Think for a moment, though, how he must have felt when Mary told him that she was pregnant and it was by the Holy Spirit. They weren't married yet and people would talk. The scriptures says that he was going to divorce her quietly. According to Jewish law, Joseph would have had two options. He could have either divorced her or had her stoned.

What I love in this story, though, is that God shows Joseph that there is another option. He can marry her. What a great reminder to us that when we think we have run out of options or think that we only have 1 or 2 options, God can and will reveal other ways to us.

As we look at Joseph's life there are so many things we can learn from him and his character. Joseph was a man of great integrity and because of that integrity God honored him. Joseph was a carpenter, a very common job in those days, and he was going to be the earthly father of the son of God. I love this because it shows me that God doesn't just use those in high social positions to influence and change the world. The scriptures say in 1 Corinthians 1: 26-31 that God often uses the common people of this world to make the largest impact because then we know it is from God and not from ourselves.

Joseph thought he knew what was right in his situation, which was to divorce Mary. But sometimes, what we see as right and wrong or what we feel is right and wrong is not always the case. This is when seeking out the Lord's wisdom is so important. History would have been drastically altered if Joseph would have acted on his own feelings and let Mary go.

My friends, when facing a life changing decision, please don't do it on your own. Take the time to seek the Lord's direction and guidance. God is faithful and He will show you what His will is for your life. He will guide you and direct you through those decisions in life if you will allow Him.

Memorize this verse today:

"Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.'"
