Today's Devotional Thought
January 11, 2013 by Rachel Piferi
Recently, it seems that God has been teaching me the importance of relying on his strength and not my own. It has been a pretty hard lesson to teach me, but I think I am getting it. And, he has taught me by flat out exhausting me.
In our mud room/laundry area, we have a section of the wall that we have set up for the kids to hang their backpacks and put their shoes and jackets at the end of each day. And, above their hooks, I hung a picture that says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
I bought it because I wanted them to see that reminder before they went to school each day. And when you come in from the garage, it is the first thing you see. Coming or going from the house, you see that reminder.
And it caught my eye when I came in last night worn from a very full day.
And deep in my soul, I felt God whisper to me, "I told you I would strengthen you to do what you thought you couldn't do today. I know you were tired and thought you didn't have the strength for today. So, I did it." And I was reminded again that the only way to fully experience God's strength is to be depleted of your own.
And I smiled because I realized that in my weariness, I get to experience the gift of God's strength. Something I just cannot experience when I feel strong.
The next time you feel as if you are being asked to do something you don't have the strength to do, then welcome the opportunity to experience God in it. And you will experience him in a way that you simply cannot experience any other way than when being weak. And then, I think you will say what Paul said in another letter to another group of people: That's why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (II Corinthians 12:10, NLT).
I certainly said that as I felt God impressing upon my heart the important lesson that can be found in feeling weak and weary. And I have to say that I also delight in my weaknesses because it is then that I realize and fully depend on the strength of the Lord.
And that my friends, is some awesome strength!
And such an awesome opportunity to experience God and in a way that we simply cannot experience any other way.
I hope you all have a blessed weekend and Lord's day on Sunday. And in whatever you are facing today, remember that when you are weak, you are primed to experience the strength and power of God.
