Spend Time with Them

My son and I were walking towards our garage to get a couple of tools for the next part of our project when he said something that just made my heart smile. He had been out there working with my husband for a couple of hours and I was happy to see them making progress on a couple of outside chores. But, I was beyond happy when I heard the statement that came out of my son's mouth as we walked across the yard together towards the garage.

I love doing all of this work together. It is just so much more fun than watching tv or playing video games.

I didn't want to seem shocked that my almost 13 year old would rather paint the columns on the front porch than play his Playstation, so I just calmly agreed with him and told him how much help he was really giving us. I told him I was so glad he was enjoying it. And that I was enjoying it too.

As he ran back to his dad, paint brush in hand, I just sat back and smiled.

It reminded me of a survey that I gave to our youth group just a couple of weeks ago. My husband and I have been leading our youth group for about 2 years and we wanted to get to know them at a deeper level. We were trying to gauge the things that are important to them, the things that they struggle with, where they get their joy from, and all sorts of things from their lives. So, we put together a survey for them {I am a recovering researcher after all!}.

And one of the questions on the survey was this:

Think about the last great day that you had. What happened on that day to make it great?

Going into the survey, I was thinking that they would talk about great days involving hanging out with their friends or having an accomplishment at school or in sports. I was not expecting the answers that we got.

Do you know the number one thing that appeared over and over as what made their last great day great?

Because I got to spend it with my parents...

Because I spent time with my mom...

Because I was with my dad...

Many of our youth's last great day was great because they were spending it {whatever they were doing} with one or both of their parents.

Wow.

I am reminded time and time again how much children and teens really desire to spend time with their parents. Even when they appear to not want to, they really do.

And, it is what makes their great days great.

As you go through your week, remember to spend time with the young people around you. Involve them in your daily tasks, take a walk with them, or just hang out with them. One thing we found in our research with youth is that their great days had nothing to do with enjoying a big amazing event. Their great days often involved mundane things that turned great because they were spending time with a parent that they loved.

Children are a blessing from God...enjoy them, teach them, and honor God's blessing in your life this week.

Memorize this verse today:

"Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him."
~Psalm 127:3
