Verse of the Day

"When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation. "

~Proverbs 10:25

Today's Devotional Thought

Lasting Foundation

When I think of a foundation I think of something concrete, something that keeps a structure grounded. When a hurricane comes through a neighborhood, the house may be gone but the foundation is still standing.

We will have storms come through our lives that may very well feel like a hurricane. Strong winds that blow us about and leave us feeling as though we have been beaten by the waves of a very angry storm. We may take a beating by our circumstances, but I am here to tell you that when our foundation is Jesus Christ we will still be standing strong when the storm passes over.

Friend, I am not sure what is happening in your life today. Perhaps you are in the middle of a fierce storm and feeling tossed around and beaten up and barely hanging on. Maybe you have just come through a storm and are feeling strong. Whatever you are facing today be encouraged that when Jesus is your foundation you can stand strong. You don't have to be the person that is tossed around and blown away.

You, my friend, are standing on the solid rock; you are grounded in a lasting foundation.

Those first 4 paragraphs you just read I wrote some time ago. And, as I was going through my documents this morning I saw that I hadn't finished this particular devotional.

It's funny to me how God works.

It's a long story, but let's just say that I wasn't supposed to be on my laptop right now. I was supposed to be doing something else, but God worked in mysterious ways, to say the least, to have me sit down and search my documents.

I've been through several weeks of comforting those around me. So many in our church family are hurting; some in small ways and others in devastating ways that overwhelm my heart and have me feeling so sad.

As I read today's verse out of Proverbs, I had so many questions run through my head about the reality of life. Here's the truth. Life is so stinking hard and sometimes can feel so unfair.

A loved one gone way too soon.

Children who are so lost in their life crying out for someone to see them, hear them, love them and so they do things that are unthinkable.

Car accidents that leave someone we love injured, hurting, wondering.

Someone we know is waiting, while death is looming.

This is the reality of those I am walking with; people I love and minister to daily.

I sat down this morning to read my Bible and I picked up my devotional, Streams in the Desert and these were the words I read:

"Do not look ahead to what may happen tomorrow. The same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering or He will give you unwavering strength that you may bear it. Be at peace then, and set aside all anxious thoughts and worries."

I began thinking about all those people and I prayed for them. I prayed they would sense God's strength in a supernatural way and would be able to stand up under their struggles and recognize that he is their strong foundation.

Life has its mountain tops and it has its valleys.

And I have come to learn in life that it is those mountaintop times in our lives that fill us with the faith, trust and strength we need to persevere through the valleys. The valleys don't last forever and they won't kill us. God promises us that he will be with us...

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4).

I heard a song Friday as I was driving to meet with someone and I began to tear up as I thought about all those in my life who are battling right now and I want to share that song with you today.

If you are struggling and battling right now and God has you in a place you don't understand and you are hanging on, barely, I want to encourage you to keep fighting. God is never going to leave you; he has promised to lead you all the way to the other side of whatever you are going through.

Memorize this verse today:

"When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation. "
~Proverbs 10:25
