Treasure and Ponder

Have you ever had anything happen to you that you really have no words to fully describe? Something that is so unbelievable, either good or bad, that even if you had the words, other people wouldn't fully understand?

I can imagine that is how Mary must have felt as she carried and delivered her first born son, Jesus. Imagine for a second what it must have been like to be an unmarried teenaged girl who just gave birth to the Son of God. Imagine that. I mean, sit for a moment and really imagine that.

Imagine holding Jesus in the wee hours of the night, just gazing at Him like all new mothers do. Imagine looking at Him and feeling so honored and yet, so inadequate to be the mother of God. Imagine being so grateful that Joseph decided to stay with you and not do what tradition and laws would have allowed him to do. Imagine wondering why God chose you out of all of the women in the history of the world to be the mother of the Savior. Imagine the wonder. Imagine the responsibility. Imagine the honor. Imagine the overwhelming fullness of her experience.

I can see why, as everyone else was spreading the word of the birth of the Savior, that Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. I imagine she barely had the words to even express what she was feeling or thinking. I imagine she was full of love and awe and perhaps even doubts if she could truly walk the road ahead. She had already experienced so much and I would imagine she wanted to tuck all of this away in her heart to dwell on, imprinting it all on her heart.

Just magnificent.

How about you? Do you have something in your life that you are experiencing or have experienced in the past that is too great, too amazing, too overwhelming, or even maybe too painful for anyone else to understand? Perhaps even, you feel alone because there is no one who can fully understand what you are feeling. You may not even have the words to explain it to anyone. I know I have experiences, relationships, and blessings that are simply too full to articulate and I am left pondering and treasuring them.

And when I do that, I can let God share in them with me. And oh what intimacy is born with my Lord, and what calm bathes my heart, when I sit still and spend time celebrating, sharing, treasuring and pondering the deepest experiences of my life with Him.

I pray that you take time this season to sit still and treasure all the things that happen. Ponder them. And share your feelings with the Lord in prayer when you simply don't have the words to articulate all that you are feeling. The beauty of our relationship with God is that we don't have to have the words to describe our most meaningful, amazing, painful, or overwhelming events. Instead, we can treasure them and ponder them in our heart and allow God to share in our emotions even when we don't have the words to express it.

Remember to treasure and ponder this season. Take time to meditate on all God is doing in your life. Don't miss things or miss tucking them away because you are too busy or overwhelmed. Be still this Christmas and treasure and ponder all that God is doing.

Memorize this verse today:

"But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart."
~Luke 2:19
