Today's Devotional Thought

If you were in charge of planning what God's arrival to Earth would look like, how would you plan it? What would it look like? Who would be involved? I imagine that you wouldn't choose a stable, an unwed teenaged mother, and some shepherds to welcome the Lord to Earth. And, that's certainly not what people in the first century were expecting either. But, that's how Jesus came to Earth originally.
Have you ever thought about the next time He comes? What will it look like?
Mark 13 gives Jesus' account of His promised return to the world. The chapter does two things. First, it is a great reminder that He is coming back. And second, it describes how there will be destruction and war and famine before He returns. But, Jesus reassures his followers that these adverse things must occur before He returns and are actually a sign that His return is near. There is no doubt that Jesus is returning to Earth. And, it certainly sounds more dramatic than the first time He came.
Another thing Jesus does in this chapter is repeatedly urge those listening to be on guard. He wants them to be prepared for His second coming. In fact, He even tells them what things will happen around them before He comes back to help them be more prepared. In verses 35 through 37, He says,
Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back - whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!'
Are you sleeping? Are you living a life that shows Jesus that you are waiting for Him. Would you be surprised, embarrassed, or ashamed if Jesus walked into your current life? Are you watching for the Lord and prepared for His second coming?
The first time Jesus came it was done in unexpected fashion. Don't be unprepared for his second coming. As we see in Mark 13, it is going to be a lot more dramatic than the first time Jesus came to Earth. But even though it will be more spectacular, we can still be just as unprepared.
Don't get caught the second time. Be prepared. Be on guard. Be living a life that Jesus can walk into. Be ready if the Lord chooses to come back in your lifetime.
