Verse of the Day

"I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile."

~Romans 1:16

Pray for Our Role Models

I am writing to tell you today that Tebow-mania has hit the Piferi household. And I would love to say that my 11-year old son who absolutely loves football started it. But, that is not the truth. His middle-aged mom who also loves football actually started it. But, it has swept through our home and we now check the television listing weekly for the Broncos game and my son wants a Tim Tebow jersey for Christmas.

Of course, Tebow-mania has not just hit my house, so finding a jersey is next to impossible.

I was thinking about all the focus on Tim Tebow as I was Christmas shopping yesterday and trying to find one of those rare jerseys. And, I was thinking of all the articles that I have read about Tebow and all of the press that he is getting. I have read articles praising him. I have read articles criticizing him. I have read articles that are down-right confused by him. And I have read articles that wonder if he will be another kids' hero who crashes and burns like all of the others seem to.

My heart was actually heavy yesterday as I thought of him. To most of us, he is just a sports figure who wows us with his football talent and who we all cheer on at the end of the game when he is trying to pull one more win out of nowhere. And when he does it, in some sort of spectacular fashion, we are wow-ed by his presence on the field. And when he humbly praises his teammates and offers thanks to God, we are wow-ed by his presence off the field. To most of us, he is just a sports figure who at this moment is a great role model.

But to others, he is a witness of Jesus Christ. He is someone who is speaking the Truth and has a great responsibility on him to keep speaking and walking that Truth. To many who watch football and may not know the Lord, he is the face of Jesus. And there is great responsibility when you are a leader in the faith.

I also think that there is a small voice inside of us that whispers, "He'll fall like all the rest. He won't be able to handle the pressure and he will do something that will ruin his reputation. He will prove someday that he truly was too good to be true."

My heart was heavy yesterday at the thought of the great responsibility that is on Tebow. And, I realized that this small whisper that you hear that warns you that Tim Tebow will fall is actually what the enemy wants. Satan is trying to bring this role model down. You see, Tim Tebow is getting a lot of press. And he is bringing a lot of glory to God. And we know that we know that we know that Satan just doesn't like that. And he is working, friends, to try to bring him down. I guarantee it.

As I search for a #15 Broncos jersey to give to my son for Christmas, I am reminded to pray for Tim Tebow. He is a wonderful role model for my 11 year old son and to anyone who doesn't know the Lord (and those of us who know him also). And, there is great responsibility on him to keep walking the Truth and to resist temptation. I pray that Tim remains steadfast in his beliefs and that God protects him from the schemes of Satan as he continues to be a national spokesman for Jesus Christ.

Please pray with me for Tim Tebow today. The world needs good Christian role models and we need to pray for them when we find the few who are not ashamed of the Gospel and who share it whenever they can. I'm glad that Tebow-mania has hit the Piferi household. And I pray for him as he continues to glorify God on and off the field.

Memorize this verse today:

"I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile."
~Romans 1:16
