Verse of the Day

"God can do anything, you know - far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams!"

~Ephesians 3:20 (MSG)

Today's Devotional Thought

October 29, 2013 by Rachel Piferi

Sometimes the simplest daily events stir up unexpected emotions in me. It happened yesterday as we shopped for a new car. And as we turned over the keys to my car of ten years and took ownership of a new one, I found myself reflecting on everything that car and I have been through over the last 10 years. I know that it may seem overly sentimental for some of you, but that car has seen a lot over the last 10 years!

Our faithful car just passed 200,000 miles last week. And while it has been a great and reliable car over the years, things were starting to go wrong with it. And we decided yesterday that it was time for a new one.

We test drove the car that we had been considering and after getting a fantastic deal, we decided that it was definitely time for a new family vehicle. But, because we were not entirely expecting to make a purchase yesterday, I had not cleaned out my old one. So there was that mad rush at the end of the purchase to clean out all of the glove boxes and pockets and storage compartments of my old SUV.

And that is when the trip down memory lane started...

As I cleaned out my car, I was amazed at the things that were stored in it from the years. In the glove box, I found my old parking hang tag for faculty parking at the University of Tennessee. I also found my old employee badge from Johns Hopkins. As I dug deeper in my glove box, I found my Maryland driver's license and an old Johns Hopkins hospital parking ticket from the months we spent going for prenatal appointments and then infant kidney appointments. There was a decorative penny from a trip to Dollywood and an Arlington National Cemetery pass.

And as I thought back over the 10 years we have had that car, I realized how much that car has been through with us over those 200,000 miles. And while I cried {I know it may seem silly, but I did cry as I watched them take my car}, I also smiled at all that we have gone through over the life that car. And at how faithful God has been through it all.

So often, we get caught up in our daily routine and we just don't stop to look back at all that God has done. And as I cleaned out my car, that is exactly what I had the opportunity to do. And I reflected on it all.

How he has grown us.

How he has comforted us.

How he has blessed us.

How he has given us life experiences that he can use for his glory.

And how he has never left our side through it all.

Turning over the keys to my old car reminded me of all that God has done in our life. And the promise of what he will do in the future. Oh how I look forward to 200,000 more miles on this new car where God will show us more of what he has for us! And when I clean out that glove box in ten years, I will smile at all that God has done.

Memorize this verse today:

"God can do anything, you know - far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams!"
