Take it to the Cross

Have you ever heard someone tell you, Just take it to the cross, when you were worrying or upset about something? Did it ever bother you when they said that? Well, I have to be honest. It was one of those phrases that used to bother me because I thought that it sometimes felt flippant and I never knew exactly how to do that. I would love to take my worries and hurts to the cross and just leave them there for Jesus to handle, but I could not ever seem to get it right. I would pray, but I never really ever left them at the cross.

Until...

I recently participated in the 7- Day Doubt Diet by Renee Swope of Proverbs 31 Ministries. It was 7 days of emailed devotions about worry and doubt and how to turn your insecurities and fears over to God. And in it, she described something she used to do when she started feeling doubt and worry. She actually got a small cross that she sat on her desk or dresser. And every time a negative thought or concern began to nag at her, she would write it on a small piece of paper, fold it up, and then put underneath the cross. It was a very tangible symbol of taking it from her mind and putting it at the foot of the cross for Jesus to handle.

The moment I read that, I just knew I had to buy a small cross specifically for this purpose. So I bought a small cross, inscribed with Jeremiah 29:11, and it sits in my bedroom. And right now, it has a couple of worries of mine, written on small pieces of paper, underneath it.

You see, I am such a tangible person and there is something indescribable about actually writing down your fears or worries or hurts, folding the piece of paper, and putting it under the cross. The actual physical process of that is such a good symbol to me of giving it over to the Lord and simply letting Jesus handle it.

If you struggle with worry or doubt or insecurity or anything else that keeps you from fulfilling the purpose God has for your life, then I suggest that you buy a cross and take your worries to it. Actually physically take them to the cross and do not pick them back up again. God does not want you to worry, doubt, or feel insecure about his calling on your life. He wants you to bring those worries to him and then keep walking in the direction that he is leading.

Do not let those doubts or fears weigh you down today. Take them {literally} to the cross today and leave them there.

Memorize this verse today:

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
