Serve Others
We are approaching the New Year and we are beginning to think about all the New Year’s resolutions that we will make. Some of us are thinking about all the things that we want to change this year. There is something about a new year that gives us a sense of a fresh new start. It is almost like having a clean slate. There are many things that I am praying and hoping for this year. I have learned, though, that so many times we make all these grandiose resolutions and if we don’t see them happening in the first few days of the year we become frustrated and just give up.
If we look at this scripture in John, we see that, as believers, we are to follow the Lord as his servants. What is a servant? That is an easy question. It is someone who serves. What if we make our New Year’s resolution to be serving others in any way that we can? If our focus in life is to be like Jesus, the greatest servant of all, then our lives need to reflect that. Jesus lived an others-centered life while on this earth, being the example for us.
Serving others can bring such joy to our life. Do you have someone in your life who is struggling in any way? Serving can be just saying a kind word or giving godly advice or maybe helping them out financially by giving them food or paying a bill if you are able to. When you do those things scriptures tell us that it is as if you are doing them unto the Lord. There are a lot of hurting people out there. And maybe you are one of them and you have been on the receiving end of generous giving. Or maybe someone just taking the time to listen and give advice when needed. How did that make you feel? Why not take the time to help someone else?
The last part of this scripture in John tells us that the Father will honor the one who serves me (me meaning Jesus). When we are serving Jesus by serving others, God sees that and He will honor us. My greatest New Year’s resolution this year is going to be to help others in any way that I can. I may fail at times, but I will continue to serve Him, by serving others. Why not join me this year in serving others?
